Rachel Szor and NAZA: Director and Cinematographer

Rachel Szor is an Israeli filmmaker and cinematographer who co-directed NAZA with Yuval Abraham. She was also one of the four directors of No Other Land and brings a strongly visual, observational approach to a film built largely from anonymous rooftop interviews.

Her role in NAZA

Szor co-directed the film and helped shape the nighttime visual language that conceals interviewees while placing them against the illuminated Tel Aviv skyline. That aesthetic is not incidental: the filmmakers say anonymity is a journalistic requirement for many of the sources, and it is a major subject of criticism of the film.

Previous work

Szor’s connection to No Other Land places NAZA within a continuing body of Israeli-Palestinian documentary work.

The rooftop visual approach

Reviews repeatedly note the contrast between dark, obscured interviewees and the bright city behind them. Some critics see that as a powerful metaphor for distance from Gaza. The production choice is therefore both practical and interpretive.

Why her page matters

Search results often collapse directors, producers and executive producers into one list. NAZA was directed by Abraham and Szor; Jonathan Glazer is an executive producer, not a director.

October 7 context

NAZA examines the war that followed the Hamas-led October 7 attack. Explore documented footage and evidence from the events that preceded the military campaign.
